George is the capital city of the Garden Route. The geographical hub
of the world is situated in a picturesque environment on the coastal plateau
between Outeniqua Mountain Range and Indian Ocean. The George Museum called the Drostdy is a graceful old building that houses the museum. The Old Slave tree is a 186 year old oak tree with a iron chain embedded in its trunk. The oldest Roman Catholic church in South Africa, the St Peter and St Paul Church, is situated here as well as the smallest Cathedral in South Africa called St Mark's Cathedral. The beaches at the secluded Victoria Bay is 3km off the N2 and situated between George and Wilderness. Renowned for surfing, especially during winter months Victoria Bay is a cove enclosed by cliffs. Many competitions have been held here as a result of the high quality wave that Vic Bay produces. The small, sheltered holiday resort, Herold's Bay with large tidal pools provides for great safe bathing and good angling opportunities. For the golfers this town offers 2 of the top 10 golf courses in South Africa. Fancourt Hotel & Country Club Estate is South Africa's premier golfing and leisure resort. There is also flying, gliding, horse riding, squash, tennis and a variety of hiking trails and mountain biking. When visiting George make sure no to miss taking a ride on the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe. This is South Africa's last scheduled steam train and runs between Knysna and George. You can then check out the Transport Museum.
